Category Archives: My Z Search

I almost missed a 300ZX, could this be the one?

I was getting ready to write a post about the need for a “Z Rescue” because of all of the Zs that I’ve come across in my search that are on their last leg.  I was looking for a post on craigslist that I had seen of 2 300ZXs that were pretty ragged out to use some of the pictures from it.  I pulled up craigslist for San Antonio, TX since that is where I thought they were and searched for “300zx”.  I noticed the top post was for a “95 300zx” so I took a look at it.  It was actually a Cherry Red ’94 just like I used to have.  I almost missed this one because my craigslist RSS search that pulls to my Microsoft Outlook was set to look for “1994 or 1995 or 1996” but not “94 or 95 or 96”.  I’ve since added those variables to the search but I feel maybe dumb luck brought me in touch with this car.  It looks to be in OK condition and he’s asking $4500 for it.  It has 180,000 miles on it but if I could get it for around $4000 I would snap it up in a heartbeat.

The best that I can tell from all of the photos it has been sitting out in the sun for a big part of it’s existence because a lot of the black trim and plastic is peeling or fading and the seats are cracked.  I plan on doing quite a bit of work on the interior anyway so that doesn’t bother me. We’ll just have to see how negotiable the price is… the post says “NO LESS” than the $4500 but perhaps I’ll get lucky.

I’ve also located a 1995 2+2 in Orlando, FL with this new craigslist search but I’m not sure yet if it’s an automatic or a 5 speed.  I’ll post an update about it later if it looks promising.

Why not a 350z or even a 370z?

Sometimes I ask myself why I am making it so hard on myself by trying to find such a specific version of a 14-16 year old car that there are so few of?  Surely I know that Nissan started making the Z again in 2003 and they continue to sell them at car dealers all over the country?  I was initially a fan of the 350Z because it was the rebirth of one of the best cars ever in my opinion and a car line that holds a special place in my life.  I still like these cars a lot but the styling is not quite my cup of tea, I like longer sleeker looking cars and the 350Z seems stubby to me and a little too egg shaped.  I also wish that Nissan would have taken the opportunity to make a 2×2 in the new Z cars, they have everything they need in place because they already make one with the Infinity G35 coupe.  I have actually thought that maybe someday I will make a Z35 coupe by taking a G35 and throwing some Z flavor to it somehow, that’s a few dollars away though.

Why am I not considering a 370Z?  I’m not considering the 370 mainly because I can’t afford one but also for many of the same reasons that I mentioned with the 350.  I’ve seen some Nismo front-ends on the 370 that I think I like but I’m not quite sure yet, they certainly give it a longer look.  I doubt Nissan will ever make another Z with the 2+2 since with these newer Zs they wanted to get back to the old 240Z days.  I was never a fan of the 2+2 styling until the Z32 was released.  With the Z32 there is no extremely noticeable difference in the 2 seater and the 4 seater aside from the gas cap being behind the rear wheel.

I’m just rambling now (as if that’s not what I always do) but I don’t mean to offend anyone who has one of these newer Zs.  I would drive one in a heartbeat and may own one someday, at this time though my search is for a long lost companion of mine and I won’t give up until it’s found.

Trying to find the right Z

I haven’t had any real luck lately in my 300ZX search but I’m sure the perfect one will pop up soon… or will it?  I thought maybe I am being too picky on the colors that I’ve narrowed it down to (basically red, white, black and silver) which leaves only 272 with black interiors that were made in 1994, 1995 and 1996.  I decided to see how many of all colors were made in those years and it turns out there were only 332 so even if I decide that I will settle for a purple or green one then that doesn’t improve my chances all that much.

I decided to open the search up to all colors because I had a thought, if I could save money by finding one in need of a paint job maybe I could paint it yellow like some of the J-Spec late 90s models that I have seen.  Yellow would certainly be a unique color here in the US for a 2+2 or any Z for that matter.  I would have to have the paint job done right and take the car down to it’s skivvies to make sure none of the original color could be seen.  I then have thoughts that maybe that is the wrong thing to do, to not keep the car with it’s factory color but I’m probably just being too straight laced there.  At any rate, I’m still searching, I ran across a purple one in Colorado that looks pretty solid but I haven’t 100% decided on operation-yellow.

The next thing that I’ve noticed is that the interior on these U.S. cars is not black.  I’ve seen photos of Z32s with black in their interiors but maybe that is just a J-Spec thing?  This also throws a kink in my plans because I don’t think the gray interior will look as nice with the tan leather as black would.  I guess I am going to have to research if you can buy J-Spec OEM dash and interior parts for left hand drive cars.  Now my mind is really spinning, so the thought then crosses my mind, if I’m going to have to buy new interior parts anyway then maybe I should add the tan interior as an option I’d consider?  I looked at the Z Registry to see how many 5 speed 2x2s where made with all colors and all interiors from 1994-1996 and there were 591.  Well, now it appears I have some more thinking to do but for now I plan on being open to any color that I see and will only judge the car based on condition and price (including the cost to get it here to Oklahoma).

You can probably tell that I am pretty wishy washy during this search, it seems that I learn something new every day.  I don’t pretend to be a Z car expert although I’d like to be someday.
